Course Description

This seminar provides students with the knowledge and skills to conduct emergency scene traffic control management, understand various applicable legislation, and utilize safety and communications equipment.

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify and discuss sections of the Manitoba Highway Traffic Act and regulation relevant to firefighters.
  • Identify and discuss sections of the Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Regulations relevant to firefighters providing traffic control.
  • Identify and discuss Canadian Standards Association (CAN/CSA) requirements for high-visibility safety apparel for firefighters providing traffic control.
  • Describe effective communication skills using a mobile radio at emergency incident scenes.
  • Describe requirements for safe vehicle placement at emergency incident scenes.
  • Demonstrate effective use of traffic STOP/SLOW paddles for traffic control at emergency incident scenes.
  • Demonstrate effective use of hand signals for traffic control at emergency incident scenes.
  • List police evidentiary requirements if offences have been committed.
  • Demonstrate traffic control methods in a controlled environment using appropriate training aids.

Prerequisites

Must be an active member of the Manitoba Fire Service
