Course Description

This course provides the knowledge and skills to respond to surface water rescue incidents, including scene size-up, Incident Action Planning, rescue of self and victims using reach and throw methods, tools and equipment for water rescue, emergency swimming, in-water victim management, incident leadership, and termination.

  • Awareness Lesson 1: The Incident and Size-up
  • Operations Lesson 1: Preplanning and Personal Protective Equipment
  • Operations Lesson 2: Communications and Scene Operations
  • Operations Lesson 3: Rescue Procedures for Self and Victims (Non-Entry)
  • Technician Lesson 1: Rescue Procedures and Leadership (Entry)
  • Operations/Technician Supplementary Lesson: Boat Orientation and Operations

Learner Outcomes

  • Size-up a surface water rescue scene and formulate an Incident Action Plan for the water rescue environment
  • Select and utilize personal protective equipment for the water rescue environment
  • Demonstrate effective on-scene operations and communications
  • Perform non-entry rescue of victims with reach and throw tools and equipment and watercraft
  • Perform entry-based victim management techniques, including in-water engagement and evacuation
  • Terminate a surface water rescue incident

Prerequisites

ICS 100

Safe Boaters License

Current Standard First Aid with CPR C (16 hrs)

Must be able to swim and be comfortable working in a water environment
