Course Description

This course provides the knowledge and skills to respond to an incident within a trench or excavation setting, including size-up, implementing an incident action plan, accessing the hot zone, support operations, supporting both a non-intersecting and intersecting trench, releasing a victim, constructing stabilization systems, lifting a load, installing supplemental shoring, packaging and removal of a victim, utilizing heavy equipment, and the disassembly of the rescue system.

Learner Outcomes

  • Describe and apply principles of soil classification, forces, mechanics and other influencing factors on trench rescue incidents
  • Gather essential information upon arriving to a trench rescue scene, including size-up and support/creation of the Incident Action Plan
  • Safely and effectively utilize personal protective and rescue equipment for a trench rescue incident
  • Recognize and mitigate hazards present at the trench rescue scene
  • Conduct appropriate incident management, including use of the Incident Command System, demobilization, and termination
  • Conduct shoring operations for non-intersecting and intersecting trenches of varying depths
  • Describe principles of load stabilization, design and construct load stabilization plans and systems, and lift varying loads with surface-based and overhead methods
  • Engage, protect, and disentangle victims from a trench rescue environment

Prerequisites

  • ICS 100
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C (16 hr)
