Course Description

This course provides the knowledge and skills to respond to cold weather and/or ice rescue operations, including rescue skills, equipment maintenance, and watercrafts.

Learner Outcomes

  • Identify the roles of responders and the types and capabilities of Personal Protective Equipment & Clothing
  • Discuss search assessment techniques
  • Assess ice/water characteristics and conditions that may increase hazard potential
  • Review level 2 support and operational support equipment available for ice water rescue
  • Identify human behavior and physiological effects in ice rescue situations
  • Explain the rescue methods and potential hazards of both shore based and entry type ice water rescues
  • Verbalize scene termination criteria
  • Support Level 2 Operations
  • Assess water/Ice conditions
  • Perform a Non-Entry Rescue
  • Demonstrate Techniques for movement on ice
  • Perform an Entry Rescue

Prerequisites

ICS 100

Surface Water Rescuer certification

Rescue Practices

Safe Boaters License

Current Standard First Aid with CPR C (16 hrs)

Must be comfortable working in cold water and ice environment
