Course Description

This course provides the knowledge and skills to respond to a school bus accident, including bus anatomy, rescue techniques, and mass casualty incident response.

Learner Outcomes

  • Define school bus terminology and anatomy
  • Identify common bus types
  • Discuss common bus construction materials and frame design
  • Review hazards associated with school bus incidents
  • Review types of tools that may be required at a school bus incident.
  • Identify Rescuer PPE and Patient Protection
  • Discuss the importance of a tool maintenance and organization:
    • At termination of the incident
    • At the Fire Hall
  • Discuss patient assessment techniques
  • Review methods of assessing patient extrication requirements
  • Identify assessment options for patient packaging and removal
  • Discuss the process of planning, receiving dispatch and responding
  • Review the steps of arrival, establishing fire protection, scene safety zones and staging equipment
  • Identify the procedures for assessing the vehicle and patient, managing potential hazards and stabilization
  • Review options for creating access and egress openings for rescuers and patients, disentangling, and removing victims
  • Identify steps of terminating the incident
