Course Description

This course provides the knowledge and skills to form a better understanding of the role of the Fire Department Safety Officer, including the needs/purposes of an FD-ISO, safety rules and regulations, how to design an FD-ISO program, identifying hazards and assessing risks, delivering the safety message, working with the IC and within the ICS system, and reading firefighters, hazardous energy, buildings, and smoke.

Learner Outcomes

  • Define the purpose of the FDISO.
  • Articulate the reasons why an ISO is important.
  • Understand the creation of safety rules and expectations that are the responsibility of the ISO.
  • List the steps for designing an ISO program.
  • Identify accompanying hazards and assess risk-taking in the ISO role in scene management.
  • Deliver appropriate safety messaging to a range of audiences.
  • Work within the Incident Command system and partnership with the Incident Commander.
  • Define the steps for a systematic approach to the ISO role.
  • Read firefighters, hazardous energy, buildings, and smoke for appropriate response mechanisms.
  • Explore the role of the ISO at various events, including structure fires, wildland fires, hazmat incidents, technical rescue incidents, and training events.
  • Conduct post-incident analysis and mishap investigations.
